Nicola, mum to almost 3 year old Jack is struggling to cope with her son’s persistent whining.
“I love my son but recently he’s been driving me mad. I don’t know where he’s got it from but he’s started whining about everything. It seems like he can’t just ask me for anything, he has to put on this whining voice and then if I say no he just keeps on and on in the same tone of voice until I want to scream! I had no idea whining could be so annoying.
He whines about being hungry, even after he’s just eaten, thirsty, if he needs to go to the toilet, if he wants something we see at the shops, if he doesn’t want to eat something I’ve given him…the list of things he whines about seems to be endless and it’s just getting bigger. What can I do? Please tell me this is just a phase and he’ll grow out of it because I don’t know how long I will be able to handle it without snapping!
Is there any way I can stop the whining? So far I’ve been trying not to give in to it and to encourage him to ask for things in a nice voice but it doesn’t seem to be working. A friend suggested a star chart but I’m not sure how that would work and so far Jack has been pretty unimpressed with star charts or stickers. Help!”
